Company Profile

Flint Hills Scientific, LLC is a small high-tech R&D company based in Lawrence, Kansas. The company specializes in advanced algorithms, and related systems and medical technologies, for real time analysis of complex signals, with special emphasis on brain wave and biologic signals, and mechanisms and device solutions for the automatic prediction, detection, and control of various disease states.

FHS has developed a suite of advanced and innovative algorithms and other related technologies for the analysis of complex signals of arbitrary origin or time-scale, with a primary specialization in analysis of brainwaves. These technologies are also applicable to non-stationary biologic signals in other therapeutic fields such as pain, cardiovascular, and diabetes, to quantify and detect or predict signal changes both accurately and in real-time. Although advanced, these algorithms are also highly practical and have been successfully implemented both in computationally efficient software and in prototype miniaturized hardware devices. One of these algorithms (U.S. Patent #5,995,868) has established FHS as the world’s leader in real-time detection and quantification of epileptic seizures and is being used in the development of an intelligent medical device for the automated detection, warning and control of epileptic seizures in collaboration with a large corporate partner. This device has the potential to revolutionize the treatment of epilepsy, by enabling for the first time the automated delivery of a therapy with high temporo-spatial selectivity.

Through a multi-disciplinary approach to research in signal and data analysis, FHS has synthesized useful concepts from the fields of mathematics, physics, engineering disciplines, computer science, and medicine into a number of state-of-the-art algorithms and systems that implement them. Our technology, which was initially targeted at brainwave analysis, contains innovations that allow it to successfully deal with numerous problems that arise in the analysis of complex signals, including non-stationarity, non-linearity, high dimensionality, and stochastic influences (e.g., signal noise or lack of determinism). Some of the concepts utilized and cultivated by FHS include order statistical analysis, signal normalization, exponential forgetting (and other time and state weighting techniques that allow adaptive learning), modeling and identification, and optimization theory. In addition, FHS has a proven track record of successful collaborations with large and small companies, federal agencies such as NIH and DOE, most National Laboratories, and numerous universities and other centers for research.

FHS has translated its core expertise in algorithm development, and signal detection and analysis to expand into the design and/or development of medical devices and related hardware, software, and firmware. These proprietary innovations allow for our advancements in accuracy, (sensitivity, specificity and robustness), detection speed, and efficiency/power consumption to enable the design and development of intelligent (closed-loop) technologies that are portable or implantable.
